Organizing your home for a successful New Year!

December 11, 2017

There’s no better time to clean out, donate and organize than right before the start of the new year.  It’s a way of cleaning that prepares you for a clutter free, less stressful year!

Attic/basement/outbuilding:  When putting away Christmas decorations, pack things together where it will be easy to find next year when you’re pulling it all out again.  Store in clear containers, or label each container so you will know what it holds.  When you’re putting away your decorations, is there anything you didn’t use?  This is a great time to clear out any unnecessary things that you see that you could let go of.  If it’s in your attic and you don’t have a strong sentimental value with it, it may be time to let it go.  Christmas and off season storage: done!

Office:  Clear out old files and clearly label new files so they are ready for the upcoming year’s bills, statements, etc.  Shred things that you no longer need and gather paperwork that you will be soon needing in order to file your taxes.  Office: done!

Bedroom:  Purge any clothing you have not worn in the past year.  One way to prepare this for the next year is to turn all your clothes hangers around backwards.  As you wear things, turn the hanger back around.  Over time, get rid of anything that’s hanging on a hanger that has not been turned around.  If you haven’t worn it in a year, you probably never will.  Bedroom:  done!

Kitchen:  Clean out your pantry and purge any old cooking ingredients that are past the expiration date, don’t forget to clean out your refrigerator too!  Use drawer organizers to clean up that drawer full of utensils that has become a cluttered mess.  Create a command center in a high traffic area near the kitchen that will help you stay organized with appointments, family activities and a place to jot down a grocery list.  You can use this space to hang keys and drop mail so that it keeps your counters clutter-free, which will make your kitchen stay tidier.  Another tip to cut down on the mail clutter is to unsubscribe to anything you do not need.  This will keep you from bringing in those extra pieces of mail that end up on the counter.  Kitchen:  done!
