Storm Planning

September 12, 2019

At the time of writing this, the East Coast Hurricane Dorian is still fresh on many people’s mind.

As the storm approached, it became evident that some of my Hurricane preparedness supplies had not been checked this year. If you are like me, you need to know that you have ample supplies in case the power is interrupted for a day or two.

Well this year I found myself with old gas in my generator, 2 empty gas cans, few batteries for flashlights and stale water from last year.

While not disastrous, this could have been an issue if the generator had not started.

The time to take inventory of storm supplies is before the weather changes.

During the year I am going to use the older gas, water and batteries and replace them with new.

This should keep the needed supplies fresh and available for the next storm.

Periodically starting the generator will also leave me confident that power is available when we need it.

Just a tip… After each generator use, draining the gas out of the fuel tank, then running it until it runs out of fuel will make that next startup easier.

Finally, have a place to meet if the entire family has to evacuate. Storms are not as bad when we are together.

Stay safe every day.
