Fun Facts About Sevier County TN IE The Smoky Mountains

 

Present day Sevier County was settled by the Scotch Irish who came from southern Virginia mainly arround Newport News, Norfolk  and Hampton VA in the early 1800s.    They came as entire families.

Until the 1930's the economy was driven by agriculture and timber.   Once the park opened at all changed.

Today the economy is driven by tourism.  

The largest employing industry is tourism.   The main types of jobs  are reservations, cleaning  and inspecting cabins and motel rooms.   Lawn service is a large industry for all the cabins.  Handyman is a common trade.  There are two Walmarts employing over 500 pople.   The food service industry thrives in Sevier County will hundreds of places ranging from the grill at the gas station to table cloth dining.  Many eating  establishments have mutliple locations    There are numerous dinner shows.    

 

Life in the Smoky is at a slower pace, "Mountain Time"

Sevier County has a larger concentration than normal of persons over 65.

One of "top 100 hospitals"  for small towns is in Sevierville. 

Gatlinburg has under 4,000 residents thus tourists out number the residents. Most people who  work in Gatlinburg do NOT  live in Gatlinburg.  

 

With the exception of Ober Gatlinburg, ski resort  from November to March life is very quiet with limited visitors.
