March 15, 2019

If you are looking for a place to be in Columbia, Rosewood may just be the place. Rosewood is located on the south side of downtown Columbia and has amazing nightlife, fun and exciting events, and historic homes brought back to life. Most events and shopping are within walking distance. It’s wonderful to relax in one of the eight parks that Rosewood has to offer.

Not only are the restaurants and shopping close enough to walk to, but there are also a number of different ways to get there, one of the most popular being by bike. Why not?! A nice bike ride to enjoy all the scenery and a great work out. Enjoy shopping and all the wonderful restaurants Rosewood has to offer. Rockaway Athletic Club is a local watering hole, famously known for their pimento cheese fries and burgers. They also have a small arcade and a pool table. Also, fun fact - President George W Bush ate here in 2005! Rosewood Dairy bar has been serving burgers, soft-serve ice cream, milkshakes, and sundaes since 1942. Rosewood is also known for its fresh farm to table foods. One of the places that you can count on for fresh food is the Rosewood Market. It’s been around since the 70s. First starting off as the Basil Pot Restaurant and then in June of 1989, opening up as what is known today as the Rosewood Market. Hundreds of people have contributed to the success of the Market. It is truly the staple of Rosewood.

Over the years Rosewood has grown into more than just the locally known Farmers Market. Rosewood hosts many events all throughout the year. In May, one of the most popular events is the Crawfish Festival. The entire street is blocked off and vendors from many different restaurants with amazing food come out. They also have a live band, lots of entertainment for the children like a bouncy house and face painting, and of course they have enough crawfish for everyone.

Rosewood has a rich history, it’s home to the Curtiss-Wright hangar at Owens Field airport. It was built in 1929. President Roosevelt and Amelia Earhart each flew into Columbia via this hangar at different times during the 1930s. The hangar was restored and is now the Hunter-Gatherer brewery. This is Columbia’s first microbrewery and pub.

Homes in the Rosewood community vary from single family homes to bungalows, and townhomes. There are newly constructed homes in Rosewood but one of the most loved parts of Rosewood are the historic homes that date back to the 1950s and 1960s and before. They bring such great character to the community. Rosewood has become one of the most affordable areas of downtown Columbia.

Rosewood is home to many different age groups. With the University of South Carolina and Midlands Technical College just minutes away many college students reside in Rosewood. Rosewood also has amazing award-winning public schools, along with Montessori schools, and music and art academies. There is a skate park for all ages and a handicap-accessible playground. They also have a Miracle League ball field which has a special turf for people with disabilities. Rosewood is very family friendly with a little hipster flare to it.

So whether you are looking for a new restaurant to indulge in, some relaxation at a park, or a place to call home and meet new people, Rosewood or “the wood” as residents call it, is the place to be.
