When to Talk to a Lender

February 19, 2019

Most first time home buyers believe they should only talk to a lender when they are ready to buy now. That is not always the case. Most FTHBs aren’t familiar with what is needed on the financing part of home buying. A lot of things come into play such as your credit score, lines of credit, income, and much more. Getting with a leader early is always a good idea to gather valuable insight. Your lender will be able to tell you what your credit looks like, if it needs work, and what are the best things to focus on to get it where it needs to be to get pre-approved. It’s always great to start talking with a lender 6-12 months out from actually buying. This way if you do have some work to do with your credit you have the time to do so. You may have old debts to pay off, or maybe you need an extra line of credit and will open a new account. Whatever the situation may be, don’t be afraid to reach out to your lender for advice. And you never know; you may think there’s no possible way for you to buy a house for another year but after talking with your lender you may realize its possible and very realistic even sooner!
