Cold weather danger!

February 13, 2019

During this cold that we are experiencing, unfortunately some folks have resorted to unconventional methods for heat.

Just this morning a friend posted on social media that their Carbon Monoxide detector went off at 2 o’clock in the morning. Someone had accidently left a burner burning on a gas stove. While this was an accident, there have been times that people used this to add some heat to a chilly home.

The harsh reality is that using alternative ways to heat your home can be deadly.  House fires and suffocation are in the news every winter, with some being traced back to improper use of gas or kerosene heaters.

While open flame is obviously a fire hazard, the biproduct of burning includes carbon monoxide.

Carbon monoxide is odorless and is not always obvious. It replaces oxygen and can kill people. If there is not a detector in the home, the presence of this deadly gas may never be known.

If you are reading this and have not checked your smoke detectors or do not have a carbon monoxide detector, please take a moment to protect yourself and loved ones.

These are inexpensive and easy to install.  If you don’t have any, and feel that you can not afford them, I urge you to contact your local fire department. Some have programs that provide them free of charge.

Let’s all keep our homes warm, safe and sound this winter.

Spring is on the way.
