The Farmhouse Trend

February 06, 2019

The farmhouse style, both in architecture and in décor, has gained popularity over the past couple of years.  Designers may be hoping this trend is over for 2019 but plenty of homes are still being built or remodeled with this style.  Some homeowners just love the simple design and even if they do not live in a true “farmhouse” they still like bringing some of these elements into their home.  Here are some items you can add to your home for the modern farmhouse style:

Go for light, neutral paint colors like whites, grays, and beiges.

Shiplap is a key component of farmhouse style (because farmhouses did not have drywall).  You can utilize shiplap on an accent wall or fireplace surround, or on all the walls like what would be found in a true farmhouse.  Beadboard or board and batten are also other types of trim that can be used to incorporate the farmhouse style.  These are usually painted white but can also be painted any neutral color like gray or a light beige.

Wide plank floors

Reclaimed wood, whether it be exposed beams or open shelving, accent walls, or mantels.

Sliding barn doors are great for taking up less space and adding a farmhouse flair to a plain doorway.

Open shelving.  This can be done instead of upper kitchen cabinets, or you can opt for open shelving in your entertainment area or dining room.  Shaker-style cabinetry, which is classic and simple, is the most used style of cabinet in farmhouses.

Other accents that line up with the farmhouse style are slipcovered furniture (neutrals of course), barn style utilitarian lighting, galvanized metal décor, furniture with chipping paint, natural rugs and lanterns.
