Is a vapor barrier really that important?

January 02, 2019

Most home builders and repair professionals agree that yes, a vapor barrier should be installed!

Crawl spaces below your home usually are dirt floors which can be damp. Water may easily access the space, and the additional moisture increases the risk of mold, mildew, heaving floors, insects, rust, and rot.

Some people don’t have a vapor barrier laid down, simply because nobody ever told them about it! Others try to cut costs, and in the long run cost themselves much more.

Fear not!

A vapor barrier is not a huge expense and does not take long to install. A simple plastic sheet with a thickness varying from 8 to 20 Mil is typical. Talk to your contractor to get an accurate thickness recommendation and labor quote.

Not only will you likely breathe easier, but anyone who crawls under your home will probably compliment you on a well-kept crawlspace.

Have a great 2019!
