Exterior Home Staging

November 15, 2018

Whenever you sell a home, many suggest staging your home.  When this is mentioned thoughts go to area rugs, furniture, fixtures, and accessories for the interior.  But many people do not even think about the exterior.  But curb appeal is a huge deciding factor as to whether or not many potential buyers even want to enter your home.

  1. Start with tidying up the landscaping and walkways.  Clean out the weeds and leaf debris from landscaped areas adding fresh mulch or ground covering.  Trim back any overgrown shrubbery or uneven growth.  And don’t forget to pressure wash the sidewalk.
  2. Next clean your windows and screens.  Dust, dirt, and water spots from blowing rain can really “block” a beautiful view.  Plus when showing your home, you want to open the blinds and window coverings letting in a lot of natural light.  You want those windows to sparkle and just become transparent.
  3. Clean the home’s siding.  Often a pressure wash job will do the trick but be careful that you do not damage the siding.  Too much pressure can do this so hiring a professional may be your best bet (and don’t forget the sidewalk mentioned above).  Even if your home is all brick, attend to the soffits and fascia.
  4. Clean patio furniture.  Dusty, grubby patio furniture is a huge turnoff.  People like outdoor space and living areas so make it inviting by cleaning all patio furniture or perhaps repainting it.  And as a last resort, replace it with new.
  5. Update exterior door fixtures and house address signage.  Perhaps new door knobs, kick plate or door knocker is needed or maybe just a good cleaning.  Don’t forget to clean any exterior lighting that often goes neglected.  New address identification really adds a fresh appearance as well.
