Homeowner Safety Tips for Halloween

October 01, 2018

Make sure your property is well lit.  Turn on as many outside lights as you can around the front of your house.  Make it clear which door they should come to.  Maybe put some solar lights along the sidewalk if it’s too dark.  Make sure those trick or treaters can find their way to your door safely!

Keep your driveway clear so there’s easy access to your front door without any tripping hazards.  Some kids may run through your yard, so be sure it’s free of large sticks they could trip on or put up signs telling them to keep off the grass.

If you are using a real candle in a carved pumpkin remember to keep out of the way of anything that could catch on fire.  Even better, use battery powered lights or plastic pumpkins with LED lights.

Keep your pets locked away inside.  All that doorbell ringing could make them nervous and unpredictable.  You don’t want your dog or cat sneaking out the door or trying to attack those little goblins.

If you’re going to be away for Halloween night, be sure to set your alarm system or if you have security cameras, be sure they are turned on.  More people are lurking around on Halloween night (and some may be up to no good) and could be scoping out unoccupied homes.

Pull your car into the garage, or out of the way of the front of your home where people will be walking to ensure that it doesn’t get any unwanted dents or scratches (or become the victim of a prank).

If you’re sending your trick-or-treater out in the neighborhood for the night, be sure they are carrying a glow stick or flashlight, so they will be seen by drivers.
