August Home Maintenance

August 02, 2018

Can you believe August is here?! Soon school will be back in session, the leaves will be changing colors, and pumpkins will be literally everywhere! Here are a few tips to keep your home running smoothly as we say goodbye to summer and gear up for a new school year.

OUTDOOR MAINTENANCE

  • Change out your HVAC filter
    • Are your rooms super hot & the AC can’t seem to catch up – either schedule an Energy Audit and check to see if your attic has enough insulation. This can be done by any professional HVAC company
  • Test all the Smoke Detectors in your home
  • Doors & Windows
    • Check the operation of all your doors and windows, this includes garage doors
    • Check the weather-stripping around them & replace as necessary
    • Check the frames for evidence of rot – repair or replace the frame as needed
    • Check for loose or cracked caulking & replace it (don't simply cover the old caulking - remove old, clean, and replace with new caulk)
  • If you have not checked your gutters in a while, now is a great time

SUMMER FUN ORGANIZATION

  • Clean and store summer gear
    • Once the last beach day is behind you, take the time to clean out the buckets, shovels and boogie boards so they’re fresh and clean for next year
    • Toss out cracked or broken toys, and shop end of season sales to replace items if needed
  • Organize family photos
    • Back up digital photos with cloud-based storage, and make an album or a book of recent photos.
    • If you would like to display some of your photos but are finding it difficult to choose, put them in a big collage instead or hang them from clothespins on a wire
  • Clean carpets and floors

BACK TO SCHOOL PREP

  • Get organized for back to school (and work)
    • Set up a shared family calendar
    • When fall hits, schedules can get busier. Set up your preferred method now, and record important back-to-school dates and recurring events
    • Prep back to school supplies and book bags for the first week
    • Plan a dinner menu for the first week back - this will help with the busyness the first week brings
  • Check emergency kits
    • Check expiration dates on food and any medications; replace as needed
    • Don’t have a kit yet? Now is the perfect time to create one
  • Organize closets before fall shopping
    • Try on clothing, fold and hang up any clothes on the floor, get rid of items you don’t wear and make a list of what you need
    • Doing this can help save money and prevent cluttering up your closet
