LANSING — Tuesday is the day all traffic will shift to the southbound side of U.S. 127 as part of the ongoing rebuild of the freeway between Interstates 96 and 496, the Michigan Department of Transportation said.

That process was expected to be completed by Wednesday morning, the agency said. Drivers might encounter delays and should follow posted detours or find an alternate route, MDOT said.

The stretch of freeway between the two interstates will be rebuilt in 2024 and 2025 as part of a larger project to revamp the U.S. 127 corridor in Ingham and Clinton counties.

MDOT plans to rebuild the northbound side of the freeway this year, with all traffic shifted to the southbound side. The agency said it will use a moveable "zipper barrier" to create two northbound lanes and one southbound lane in the morning, changing over to two southbound lanes and one northbound lane in the afternoon.

Work will move to the southbound side in 2025, when MDOT plans to maintain two lanes in each direction on the newly rebuilt northbound side
