Preventing Home Fires

According to the Federal Goverrnment, "each year more than 2,500 people die and 12,600 are injured in home fires in the United States with direct property loss due to home fires estimated at $7.3 billion annually."  
 

Here are some safety tips to prevent a home fire:

- Test fire alarms once a month and replace batteries if they aren't working.
- Don't leave the room when cooking food.
- Don't leave the oven on or pots on the stove when you aren't home.
- Stay at least 10 feet away from your house when grilling.
- Replace all old or damaged appliance cords.
- Do not run electrical cords under rugs or other furniture.
- Completely extinguish fires before leaving or going to bed.
- Keep heaters or furnaces at least 3 feet away from anything that can catch on fire.
- Clean the lint filter in your dryer after every use.
- Never leave burning candles unattended.
