7 Easy Fixes to Try if Your Heater Isn't Working

March 15, 2023

It's always the worst timing when something in your home stops working or breaks down especially your furnace! Your furnace is one the most important appliances in your home even if the summer months.  Before you call the repair company take a look at the list below to see if they do the trick.

Check your thermostat

  •  Make sure it is switched to "Heat" rather than "Cool"
  • Turn the thermostat up 5 degrees higher to see if it kicks on
  • If  you have a scheduled set - make sure it's on the correct a.m. and p.m. settings

Check you electric panel & Switches

  • Make sure the breaker to your furnace is turned ON
  • Make sure the switch is turned ON to your furnace - it's possible to hit and turn it off
  • Ensure the front panel covering the blower motor is secured tightly

Change the Furnace Filter

  • It's recommended to change your filter every 3 months, believe it or not a clogged filter can cause the furnace to shut off.  A dirty filter can also cause soot buildup on the heat exchanger which reduces its efficiency and shortening its lifespan.

Make Sure the Gas is On

  • Is your furnace not blowing hot air?  Similar to the switches, it's possible someone may have turned off the gas valve. Trace the gas line to the meter and ensure the handle is parallel to the gas pipe.

Make Sure Chimney Flue is Clear

  • Sometimes due to the heat birds are drawn to the chimney exhaust flue and have been known to fall in.  Turn the furnace off, thermostat down and dismantle the duct where it exits the furnace to check for any possible debris.

Flush Out Drains Lines

  • Newer high efficiency furnaces during the heating season easily drain off several gallons of water a day.  If the lines become restricted due to mold growth of sediment the furnace will stop running.  If you notice the line looks dirty simply remove the hose, fill it with a mixture of water and 25% bleach, then flush it for several minutes.

Look for Leaky or Blocked Ducts

  • If you notice that one or two rooms are colder than others, first ensure the registers are open.  If they are, take a look at any ductwork you can see for any possible gaps or branching points.  If you see any gaps seal with area with special metal duct tape that you can easily pick up at your local hardware store.  Standard household duct tape will deteriorate quickly.
