It's no secret... real estate is one of the best investments you can make.  As the market has cooled off to different degrees across the country, there will be more opportunities in the near future. What if there aren't any deals to be had in your neck of the woods right now? If you are stashing cash in a checking or savings account you may want to consider a different plan.

A loan officer I work with mentioned that he had invested in several "brokered CD's" for a 12, 18, and 24-month period. CDs? For some reason, this sounded like something your grandfather would look for. After doing a little research, I found out that CD rates had jumped up considerably this year. Certainly, they are well outperforming traditional checking and savings accounts right now. As of today, Fidelity Investments had 12-month options at 4.6%. Much more to learn about the topic, but worth considering. Find a brokerage (Charles Schwab, Fidelity) or check out websites like www.NerdWallet.com for more info. Most importantly, put your money to work!
