Making The Move To Ditch Cable TV

March 07, 2018

You’ve heard about the streaming devices:  Firestick, Roku, Apple TV.  You’ve heard about the streaming sites:  Amazon Prime, Sling, Netflix, Hulu.  They’re all the rave.  And they are not going anywhere.

Eliminate unwanted cable bills.  With streaming sites, there is no cable contract to get stuck with.  Most of the streaming sites allow you to sign up, pause, or cancel with just a few simple clicks.  Want to take a couple of months off from watching your shows?  Cancel or pause your subscription, save the money for that time off, and return when you’re ready to start watching TV again.

Pay for what you actually want to watch.  Eliminate paying that hefty cable bill that includes 200 channels when you only watch one or two channels on a regular basis.  Amazon Prime starts around $11 per month and includes all types of programming, versus a $70 cable bill.

You might not need that sports package after all.  So many people are attached to their cable package because it offers the sports channel that’s a must have.  However, many apps can be downloaded and accessed online through a Firestick or Roku that allow for online real-time viewing.  For instance, the Superbowl and the Olympics were able to be viewed from the NBC app…and for free.

Watch when you want to watch.  You don’t have to sit down and hit play until you’re ready to watch.  This limits the “passive” tv watching, having the tv on and playing in the other room while you’re not really paying attention.  This is also better for kids, to intentionally watch a show, instead of having the constant background noise that children tend to still pay attention to while they play.

The ability to get even better programming.  There are many popular shows that are original series, made exclusively for Amazon Prime, Netflix or Hulu.  Shows that are not even available on cable networks.

Ditch commercials.  No need to elaborate there!

Antennas are still popular if you want to watch for free.  Don’t assume that antennas are ancient.  Current antennas are small, easy to hook up and can pick up a variety of channels over the air.  You don’t have to spend an arm and a leg either, you can find a good quality antenna on Amazon for as little as $25.
