Watch Out For Those Critters

April 14, 2022

Owning and managing real estate can sometimes have challenges, especially when it comes to dealing with critters. Depending on the part of the U.S. you reside in, you may encounter scorpions, snakes, ants, termites, mice, rats, squirrels and raccoons, just to name a few. While some can be damaging to a property or structure, others can prove damaging to your health.

I have personally encountered snakes, mice, ants and raccoons either as a property owner or as an agent managing property for a seller. Each critter requires a different method of eradication or removal. While I was able to apply DIY methods for the ants and mice I came across, I felt a need to call in the professionals to handle the snakes and raccoons.

The raccoons were particularly tricky to get rid of because they are smart and can overcome initial methods of removal. Raccoons also can carry disease, even rabies. Their excrement is toxic. That's why I felt a need to contact professional exterminators to remove them and their waste.

Depending on the type of critter and the scale of the problem, it is completely reasonable to deal with some pest issues on your own, however, make sure that you understand your city bylaws for the critters you are allowed to kill, versus the ones you must trap, for example, and other pertinent rules regarding critter eradication or removal. Hiring a professional pest control company is highly advisable when in doubt or if infestation is large.
