Tips For The First Time Homeowner

December 09, 2021

Congratulations to the new homeowner, as you take possession of your new home there are items you should look into for safety and to familiarize yourself.

It is a good idea to change the locks on all the doors, to safe guard against extra keys floating around to your home. You may contact a local lock smith or do it yourself if you are handy with tools.

Test the smoke detectors and carbon monoxide detectors. Make sure they are in working order and make a note of the dates if they are the sealed type. Keep in mind each state seems to be going to the 10 year sealed detectors. For example in Illinois the date to have the 10 year sealed detectors in place in single family and multi-family homes is by January 1, 2023.

Locate the main breaker box, you want to make sure each breaker is labeled clearly and identify the main breaker in case of emergency.

Locate and replace your HVAC filters and make a note to change the filters in a timely manner.

Locate your thermostat to determine if the power of the digital thermostat is electric or batteries. The batteries do need to be changed on a schedule so they do not corrode or run down to cause a thermastat malfunction.

Washer would need to have the water hoses and connections checked for age. The dryer ducts and vents should be cleaned out.

Just a few things to check over as you take possession of your new home. Enjoy!
