Preparing Your Home for Winter
It is that dreaded time of year when the snow will be here before we’d like it to be, the sun sets earlier and it is colder than we’d like. Before these days are here use these few steps below to ensure your home is ready. It could save you money in utility costs and prevent property damage!
Fertilize Your Lawn
Autumn is a great time to fertilize your lawn. Treating your lawn in early fall and late fall with a light application will keep your lawn healthy. Make sure you use a fertilizer made especially for the winter months. Another tip, aerating your lawn if possible!
Weather Strip Doors and Windows
To help save money on the utility bills and keep that heat inside your home make sure your doors and windows have the proper weather strips. In order to find where you need to add these, look to see where the light comes through the windows and doors. Another way is to try lighting a candle and see if blows out from the wind by the windows or doors. You can also add winter window kits that can easily be installed using a blow dryer and will help keep that heat in.
Drain Outdoor Faucets
Remove and store hoses. Shut off the water valve that leads to the outside faucet. Typically, you will find this in your basement, crawl space or garage. Remove brass plug and let the faucet drain. Once drained replace brass plug. Secure a winter cover over the faucet and any other outdoor pipes.
Check your Water Heater and Furnace
Before winter really begins it is important to check your furnace and water heater to ensure they are working properly. It is highly recommended to have a professional come out do a check-up on your system. It will extend the life of your system and will prevent expensive repairs in the middle of the winter.
