Prepping for Fall

October 15, 2020

Fall….. some people like it, some don’t.  I fall in the category of don’t.  My heart races every year as spring approaches.  Seeing new life, leaves beginning to come out, flowers coming up but with fall I see the leaves dropping, roses are giving their last hurrah and other flowers are dying.  To get through this, I turn my attention to doing things instead of dwelling on it.  I start my Fall Checklist, top of the list is decorating for the fall holidays.  That always turns my focus on the gatherings that will be happening and am I really prepared, or better yet is my house really prepared.  Getting the list going and done means that I can focus on family and the joy of the holidays and not just getting the house ready.  What do you ask needs to be done?

Like Spring Cleaning, it’s time to take stock of your home, inside and outside, and preparing for the weather to come.  In the south that doesn’t mean the harsh winter that the north gets but we do need to prepare for colder temperatures, rain, possible ice and yes sometimes the day of snow!  A good idea is to start with the outside.  First, just go stand, at a distance, and take in the outside of the house.  What do you see? Are there shingles missing from the roof?  Do you see stains where water has run down, remember that water is not a friend so be sure to look at the places where water can get in.  How do the windows and doors look?  Is there rot or cracks on the sills or thresholds?  If so, replace the damaged parts.  Look closely at your house, if something seems different than last year, check it out.

Next, turn your attention inside.  Really look at things like ceilings, floors, doors and windows.  Make sure that your seals are good to keep cold air out.  Are any of your floors sagging?  Any stains on the ceiling?

Now you can begin the process of fall cleaning.  Not much different than spring, vacuum window treatments, clean windows and sills. Wipe down walls, ceiling mounted light fixture, baseboards, and kitchen cabinets.  Don’t forget to change the furnace filters and the batteries in your smoke detectors.  Now enjoy all the festivities!
