Ready to Sell?

May 11, 2020

It’s the time of year that we start thinking of changes out with the old and in with the new.  One of those changes you may be considering is selling your home.  You may ask if your home is ready to sell?  Here are a few tips to spruce up your house for the market.

A good starting place is to declutter your home.  Rid the entryways and mud rooms of extra coats, bags and shoes.  Keep countertops clear.  Consider packing up little used appliance that just sit on the kitchen counter, this will help to show how much counter space you have to potential buyers.  Straighten the kitchen and bathroom cabinets, buyers will open them.  Remove personal items from the rooms such as family pictures, sports memorabilia, and any collectible items.

Once you have decluttered it’s time for the deep clean.  Clean all windows, window sills, ceiling and baseboards.  Dust all shelves and wipe down mirrors.  Don’t forget to clean the corners and shades on light fixtures.  In the kitchen, wipe down appliances, cabinets and be sure to clean the range hood and filter.  In the bathroom, don’t forget the grout!

Now that you have decluttered and clean, take a look at your home.  Has it been a while since you have done little changes such as painting, replacing hardware on cabinets, repairing or replacing outdated or broken appliances and replacing any bulbs that are out?  Now’s the time to do it, these little updates can help brighten the home. Also, think about having the outside pressure washed to brighten up the overall look outside.  Trim back any shrubs or limbs from the house.  Add mulch to the flower beds to make them “pop”.  Remember that potential buyers see the outside of your home before the inside and can form opinions when they pull up.

Speaking of potential buyers, most buyers will have a home inspection done.  Before listing your home, consider having one done on your home yourself.  This gives you the opportunity to make repairs that need to be done such as any loose handrails, repair leaks or clogs or any other damage that you may be unaware of and may turn up when the buyers perform an inspection.

Whether you decide to sell your home or not, these are good yearly “spring cleaning” things to think about and if you decide to sell, it may help to get your home sold quicker!
