Home Improvements In The Winter

January 13, 2020

Winter is a good time for home improvements inside your home. With temperatures lowering and in some areas, winter storms abounding, you may have an abundance of time to tackle some or all of these.

Install Programmable Thermostat

Technology has greatly influenced home appliances in recent years, especially when it comes to programmable thermostats. This project lets homeowners customize the heating and cooling of their home to fit their needs by allowing them to automatically regulate the temperature in their home. With different programming options available, including the ability to control some thermostats remotely, this improvement can not only enhance your quality of life, but save you money in the process.

Check For Drafts

One of the least expensive home improvement project a homeowner can undertake this winter season is sealing openings and air leaks in their home. One way to find air leaks in your home is to light a match or light a stick of incense and slowly move it around the seam of a door or window. If the match stays lit or the incense smoke rises, you’re good. If the match blows out or the incense stick blows around instead of rising, you may have an air draft. Taking the time to seal seams around windows and doors with caulk, waterproof sealant or weather-stripping will not only improve your energy consumption, but lower your utility costs as well. Use caulk to seal those openings and you’re all set! Sealing leaks can improve the overall quality of your home and help to fix common problems, such as:

  • Reduce noise from outside
  • Better humidity control
  • Lessen pollen, dust and insects from entering home

Test Smoke Detectors and Carbon Monoxide Detectors

It’s always important to maintain your smoke and carbon monoxide detectors. Test each detector to confirm they’re working properly. Change the batteries as well, it may be a good idea to do this twice a year to ensure all of your detectors continue to work when and if needed.

Prep Your Generator

A generator can provide you with a lifeline in a power outage. It’s a good idea to check it every couple months but definitely check it now that winter is here. Make sure it’s fueled at the start of winter and have extra fuel if needed in the event of a storm.
