Cades Cove, Tennessee. A “must see.”

October 16, 2018

Most people will have heard of the Great Smoky Mountains National Park, which straddles the border between eastern Tennessee and western North Carolina. Established in 1934, it covers approximately 816 sq. miles. The park was visited by an estimated 11+ million people last year. With its’ mountains, lakes, forests, hiking trails and wildlife, some may not be aware of Cades Cove in Tennessee. An “intrical” part of the state park.

Cades Cove was first settled in the early 1820’s by Europeans, which began to build a self-sustained community, to include log homes, barns, schools and churches, along with clearing land for farming. The community continued to grow, and by 1850 the population had increased to 132 families. Eventually, as Tennessee and North Carolina began to purchase land for the creation of the state park in the 1920’s, the community slowly began to disperse. By the mid 1940’s the last school and post office had closed.

Today, the Cades Cove community is a “must see” when visiting the park. The history in the remaining structures of the eleven miles long loop, along with the wildlife and natural beauty of the area, will give us an indication of the ways of these new settlers of so long ago, and the struggles to create home sites in the wilderness of the time period.

If you do happen to encounter a traffic jam on the loop, it will most likely be the visitors stopping to watch the occasional bear and her cubs near the road.
