5 Things You Need to Know When You Walk Into A Public Open House

November 07, 2017

While viewing pictures of properties on line can be entertaining, there’s nothing quite like seeing your future home in person.  From dreaming about setting the first turkey on the table for Thanksgiving, the first Christmas in the home, to playing in the backyard with your children or grandchildren… it’s exciting!  An Open House is a chance to have a closer look and feel of the home.  Here are some thing you should know before attending an Open House.

  1. Sign In – It is always nice to comply with the sign in sheet from the listing agent.  This usually asks for basic information such as name, phone number, and email.  This helps the agent know how many people attended the open house.
  2. Be nice –  Greet the agent conducting the Open House. Ask questions, look around, and be respectful of other people at the open house. Politely let the hosting agent know if you are working with another agent.
  3. Take notes – Now is a great time to take notes or room measurements.  The hosting agent will normally have a detail sheet on the house that will give you additional information such as square footage, taxes, year built, etc.
  4. Check it all out – When visiting an open house don’t limit yourself to the inside of the house.  Check out the backyard, surrounding area and get a feel of the neighborhood. How close is the property to the nearest fire station, school, or grocery store?
  5. Time Conflict – Remember an open house isn’t the only time a house can be shown.  Call a real estate agent for additional showing times.
