WASHTENAW COUNTY, MI -- A Civil War-era barn outside Chelsea has a new life as a luxury “barndominium.”

A private circle drive welcomes guests to the mid-19th-century barn which strikes a sleek, contemporary figure with dark siding and large picture windows. The entrance of the five-bedroom, five-bathroom home on 3.25 acres at 20925 Waterloo Road is a glass-walled addition that welcomes guests into the great room and provides plenty of natural light. Designers took advantage of the barn’s 25-foot ceilings and original axe-cut beams to lend an airy open-concept feel to the main floor. The great room features a gas fireplace, walk-out deck and a custom TV cabinet with sliding barn doors that conceal the screen and reveal a pair of bookcases. An accent wall made from reclaimed wood separates the living space from the kitchen.

The home’s modern kitchen features a center island with a bar, stainless steel countertops, Thermidor appliances, a walk-in pantry and custom overhead lighting that combines cast-iron pipe with Edison bulbs to lend an industrial vibe. An attached dining area features one of three chandeliers made from repurposed farm implements.

A custom staircase that leads to the loft-like upper floor was designed and welded on-site by a master welder.

The home’s hickory floors feature radiant in-floor heating, and low-e windows help keep the home energy efficient. A large solar array atop the three-car attached garage provides a step toward energy independence, and fiber optic internet service means the home is ready for a tech-savvy occupant.
